Commonhouse teams up with Shovels and Rope for Swimmin' Time lager to benefit Metanoia

A few weeks ago, we spotted dynamic duo Shovels & Rope leaders Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent pitching in at Commonhouse Aleworks in Park Circle with the brewery teasing an upcoming collaboration brew.
[content-1] This week, Commonhouse's Hank Hanna announced the result of the project, an easy-drinking lager called Swimmin' Time, named for the band's most recent album. Hanna says he thought of the idea of working with ShoRo while at High Water Festival at Riverfront Park, a stone's throw from the brewery.

The project will also benefit Metanoia, a North Charleston economic development non-profit that advocates for affordable housing, community business growth, education, and job training in the area.

"We are glad that each time their patrons sit down with one of these drinks to build community, they will also be supporting us in building community through youth programming, housing development and economic development," said Metanoia CEO Bill Stanfield in a press release this week.

Swimmin' Time Lowcountry Lager will be released in cans and on draft at the brewery on Oct. 26.more…

Babas on Cannon now open with vino, Manhattan carafes, and snacks galore

There's bread service, and then there's potato chip service. I'll take the latter any day.

Babas on Cannon, described as "an old world cafe serving espresso and apero," officially opened their doors last night at 11 Cannon St.

I stopped by the small space around 7:30 p.m., ordering a glass of Garnacha at the counter before settling into the very farthest corner of the restaurant (my post Pilates sweat did not mesh with the well-dressed and jaunty clientele on hand, but no one seemed to mind).

Couples sat at the counter by the window facing the street and at the counter by the bar, and groups of revelers stood and sipped as their friends trickled in through the front door.

I started with the complimentary green olives and potato chips (please, every small plates/tapas eatery from now until the apocalypse, bring this to the table) and perused the menu, divided into "aperitivo case" and "a la minute," all under the umbrella of "snacks."

The friendly server/chef/bartender who stopped by my table (as Eater reported last week, Babas is keeping their staff small and tight) asked if I needed anything and, not sure if I was supposed to go back to the counter to order my food, I sputtered my choices to him, "mushroom conserva and pickled shrimp please!"

It's opening night, mind you, so he wasn't sure what the protocol was yet either.more…
